Time spins out of control, shifting between Russia in the early 20th century and Harlem a hundred years later; characters change identities; and every answer opens into a new question.

Directed by Fred Newman, Castillo's Artistic Director from 1989 until 2005, What Is To Be Dead? is a series of philosophical conversations gracefully folding themselves into a deeply thought-provoking play.
