When a young African American Harvard undergrad gets on an Amtrak train to Florida and sits down next to the impossibly old Satchel Paige on his way to spring training, you know you are in for a strange ride. Satchel: A Requiem for Racism is a fantastical history play by Fred Newman that explores the impact of segregation on the Black community through the character of Satchel Paige, the greatest pitcher to come out of the segregated Negro Leagues and, very likely, the greatest pitcher of all time. It will be staged at the New Federal Theatre as part of a double bill with Josh by Michael A. Jones, which focuses on Negro League player, and Satchel Paige's close friend, Josh Gibson.
This special Black History Month co-production of Satchel and Josh marks the first collaboration between two of New York City’s most impactful theatre companies—New Federal and the Castillo Theatre—and between their two artistic leaders, Woodie King, Jr. and Fred Newman. Founded in 1970, The New Federal Theatre has brought to the stage some of the most important Black plays of the last three decades, and has nurtured virtually every major African American actor who has gone on to success on stage and screen.
