A Rose Among Thorns (Rosa Parks) explores the famous incident that sparked the modern civil rights movement in the 1950’s segregated South. The play looks beyond the iconic figure to see Rosa, a woman with quiet dignity as well as a quiet fire of human emotions, strengths, weaknesses, humor, and triumphs. The performance by Ella Joyce (best known from TV’s Roc) as Rosa has been called “spellbinding” by the Winston-Salem Journal and “incredible” by the Los Angeles Sentinel.
This loving historical recollection seeks to straighten out the occasional misinformation that sometimes surrounds her "famous incident". The play pays tribute to Mrs. Parks in hopes of keeping her story alive orally by celebrating her exemplary character and by infusing others (young and old) with her spirit to seek social change, and to choose involvement with political and civic issues concerning us today. Mrs. Parks tells her story simply as she speaks of things past, present, and eternal.
