The Moth was founded by poet and novelist George Dawes Green in 1997. The Moth started out with George inviting friends over to listen to amazing stories. As word spread, the stories at the Moth outgrew his living room and moved to Joe’s Pub, City Hall Restaurant, The American Museum of Natural History, BAM Café and various lounges in downtown Manhattan. The Moth believes that when a person sits down to write a work of fiction, they do it alone, but when they stand up to tell a story, they turn a random group of people into an audience.
