Ed Bullins

2003 Recipient

Ed Bullins is one of the most influential playwrights of the Black Arts Movement (BAM). He was the editor of Black Theatre, a magazine published by the New Lafayette in addition to serving as Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, a position in which he helped to raise money to assist in the Panthers' political activities. Bullins has written several plays, including Clara's Old Man, The Corner, The Theme is Blackness, The Electronic Nigger and Death List and In the Wine Time. Bullins is continually concerned with getting important themes across to his audience through his plays, and believes that theatre must be revolutionary for Black art to be truly successful.
