2008 Recipient - Claque Theatre

Claque Theatre was originally founded as the Colway Theatre Trust by Ann Jellicoe, who also originated the concept of the community play in 1978 when she was asked to write a play for her children's school. It evolved into something quite different from the usual school play — a large scale piece, including people from all sections of the town, based upon historical research of the area by local people, and animated by a team of theatre professionals. The Claque Theatre has been under the artistic direction of Jon Oram since 1985, and remains in the forefront of this new art form, contributing to a developing international movement, transforming the way in which people view both theatre and community. Involving sometimes thousands of people in a production, Community Plays have been seen all over Britain, and internationally in Europe, the United States and across Canada.
